Mastering Oral Hygiene: Expert Tips for a Beautiful Smile

A clear guide to brushing, flossing and cleaning between teeth, plus how to build daily oral hygiene habits you can actually keep up.

Close-up of clean, healthy teeth

Good oral hygiene is less about perfection than consistency. Plaque returns every day, so a routine you can repeat is more useful than an elaborate plan you abandon.

Brush thoroughly, not aggressively

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste unless your dental professional has recommended something different. Angle the bristles toward the gumline and clean every surface with gentle, controlled movements. Brushing harder does not necessarily clean better and can contribute to wear or gum irritation.

Clean between teeth

A toothbrush does not predictably clean the contact areas between teeth. Floss, interdental brushes, water flossers and other aids can each have a role. The best option depends on spacing, dexterity, restorations and gum health.

Notice patterns

Bleeding, persistent bad breath, sensitivity, pain, a dry mouth or a change that does not heal deserves attention. These signs have different causes and cannot be diagnosed through a blog post.

Make prevention individual

Diet frequency, saliva, medications, previous cavities and gum findings can change your risk. A dental hygiene visit can help tailor the routine and identify areas that need more support.
